Meaning— 1. Programmed cell death or cell suicide (in physiology)

                         2. Falling leaves (in greek)

What is the difference between necrosis and apoptosis?

When we talk about apoptosis, it means “unwanted cells are programmed to death in controlled way. They does not produce inflammatory reaction in the neighbouring tissue. While in necrosis, death of cells due to disease,injuries etc.

Functional significance of apoptosis:-

1. Vital role in cellular homeostasis.

2. Removal of cells that is damaged beyond repair.

3. Essential event during development and in adult stage.


Examples of apoptosis 

1. In the formation of synapses, up to 50% of neurons are removed by apoptosis.

2. Removal of tissue of webs between fingers and toes in foetal developement.

3. Cyclic sloughing of inner lining of endometrium resulting in menstruation.

4. It prevents autoimmune disease.
